Other Things You Should Budget For

Approach and Landing Fees

Each flight includes a free visual or instrument approach and landing at Bristol International Airport.  You will need to budget for other approach and landing fees.  We will not add anything to the costs, which are set by the Airports.  They vary from Airport to Airport, so it is difficult to predict exactly what you should budget.

These are typical costs for standard courses:

PPL course    £600

6 hrME course    £165

15 hr CPL course    £280

25 hr CPL course    £420

28 hr ME/CPL course    £400

15 hrs of IR flying    £330

25 hrs of IR flying    £530

Flight Tests

In addition to your approach and landing fees, you’ll need to budget for aircraft hire (at the solo rate) and the examination fee.  These fees are set by the CAA each April and last for a year.  The current rates are on the CAA website; there is a link from our website: www.bristol-aviation.net. The 2009 rates are as follows:

Private Pilot Licence Skills Test    £185

Multi-Engine Piston (Landplane) Class Rating Test    £192

Commercial Pilot Licence Skills Test    £762

Instrument Rating Skills Test    £762

If you choose to do the combined MEP and CPL course, there will only be one test, so you’ll save on aircraft hire, approach and landing fees and the test fees (a little over £500 total); as well as the stress!

Odds and Ends

There is a list of local accommodation on our website. You need flight equipment such as a headset, navigation equipment, kneeboard, stopwatch. You will lastly need to pay the CAA to issue your brand new licence.
